Community health centers (FQHCs) and sliding-scale care
Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are community health centers funded by the federal government. They must serve everyone, with or without insurance, and charge on a sliding scale based on income and family size. Many offer medical, dental, mental health and pharmacy care in one place. Free clinics, usually run by volunteers and charities, may charge nothing at all.
You can also confirm a center through the official HRSA Find a Health Center tool.
Common questions
- Are there any free clinics near me?
- Most areas have at least one free clinic or community health center. Describe what you need above and Find Care lists nearby options. Call ahead to confirm hours, services and whether you need an appointment.
- Is there a free dental clinic near me?
- Many community health centers offer sliding-scale dental care, and dental schools often offer low-cost visits. Search "dentist" above or see our dental page.
- Can I go to a community health center without insurance?
- Yes. FQHCs must see patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay. Bring proof of income if you have it so they can apply their sliding-scale discount.
