The Murray Standard
Two systems, one starting point

Military & Veteran Healthcare

Military Healthcare (TRICARE) and VA Healthcare are run by different agencies with different rules. This hub keeps them separate on purpose, so you can find the right system first and the right topic second.

TRICARE and VA Healthcare are not the same healthcare system. Your eligibility, enrollment, coverage, and care options depend on your military status and circumstances.

If this is a life-threatening emergency

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department right now. Go to the closest one — it does not have to be a VA facility. Get care first; sort out coverage and paperwork afterward.

In crisis, or thinking about suicide?

The Veterans Crisis Line is free, confidential, and open 24/7. You do not need to be enrolled in VA health care to use it.

After an emergency, tell VA within 72 hours so your care team knows. VA's emergency care page explains what to do next. VA emergency care guidance(opens in a new tab)

Which system covers you?

TRICARE and VA health care are often confused. Start by seeing which one matches your situation — you may be able to use both.

Military Healthcare

TRICARE & Department of Defense Healthcare

TRICARE is the Department of Defense health program for the uniformed services community. Plan options and costs depend on your status, sponsor, and location.

For:

  • Active-duty service members
  • National Guard members
  • Reserve members
  • Military retirees
  • Spouses
  • Children and other eligible family members

Official source: TRICARE.mil (opens in a new tab)

VA Healthcare

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs / Veterans Health Administration

VA health care is delivered by the Veterans Health Administration. The VA notes that eligibility and coverage can depend on service history and other factors, and that VA health care can exist alongside other coverage.

For:

  • Veterans
  • Eligible transitioning service members
  • Eligible family members and caregivers
  • Veterans enrolled or seeking enrollment in VA health care

Official source: VA.gov Health Care (opens in a new tab)

These are two separate federal systems, and some people qualify for both. Eligibility depends on service history, status, and other factors, so always confirm your own coverage with the official source before making decisions.

Which system am I supposed to use?

Answer a few short questions about your service and family situation. Your answers stay on your device, and the result is a list of systems worth checking — not an eligibility ruling.

This check is educational and is not an eligibility determination. The Murray Standard is not affiliated with the Department of Defense or the Department of Veterans Affairs. Only DEERS and TRICARE can confirm military health coverage, and only VA can confirm VA health care eligibility, your priority group, and your benefits.
